2026 Declared the Era of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. But, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is also apparent elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far.

When these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
