Families of the Air India accident passengers sue aircraft firms Boeing and Honeywell
Family members of a number of passengers who perished the this year's Air India disaster have filed a lawsuit in the United States court system against aircraft manufacturer Boeing and supplier Honeywell.
The legal filing, lodged on this week, alleges that faulty fuel switches resulted in the catastrophe and asserts both companies of carelessness.
Flight AI171, heading to London Gatwick, crashed moments after leaving the runway from Ahmedabad, causing the deaths of all 260 passengers and crew.
The inquiry team have identified the engine cutoff mechanisms after early evidence indicated that engine fuel was interrupted moments after the plane left the ground.
The filing claims that both the manufacturers were knew of the safety concerns associated with the plane's systems ever since the creation and marketing of the Dreamliner model.
The case cites a earlier advisory that urged—though did not mandate—airlines to check the safety lock to prevent unintentional movement.
For the crashed jet, the mechanism was shifted from operational mode to off, which disrupted the propulsion according to the initial analysis.
Those suing claim this represents a flaw that enabled the inadvertent stoppage of fuel, resulting in a catastrophic loss of thrust.
They added that the manufacturers took no action to prevent the tragedy although having knowledge of the potential issues.
The companies also reportedly neglected to alert airlines that the components should have inspection and replacement, and failed to provide updated mechanisms.
