Low-Dose Aspirin Demonstrates Significant Impact in Reducing Bowel Cancer Return, Trial Finds

A daily dose of aspirin can dramatically lower the chance of some colorectal cancers returning after surgical removal, as per a major research into the protective effects of the common drug.

Scandinavian researchers discovered that patients who used a low daily quantity of the drug after having tumour resection were twice as less likely to experience a cancer recurrence over the subsequent several years than those who were given a dummy pill.

The trial included cancer patients whose cancers possessed certain gene changes that rendered them susceptible to the drug’s anti-cancer effects. Approximately 40% of colorectal cancer sufferers have similar alterations.

Researchers recruited over 3,500 individuals who had had colorectal tumor surgery at clinics across Northern Europe. DNA tests on 2,980 of the subjects identified a significant number, or a substantial proportion, had alterations in genetic material that are part of a molecular mechanism referred to as PI3K, which is associated in the disease.

The individuals with the alterations were randomly assigned to receive either 160mg of aspirin daily or a inactive pill for 36 months after treatment. Those taking aspirin were significantly less likely to have the cancer come back than those using the placebo, the study demonstrated.

The treatment appears to protect against the disease by suppressing inflammation, disrupting with the PI3K mechanism, and reducing the function of platelets, which can surround cancer cells and effectively mask them from the patient’s natural protection.

Researchers emphasized the need to perform genetic tests on each colorectal cancers so that individuals who could profit from the treatment could be given the drug. “This is a common medication that is very low-cost,” added.

Aspirin has been on the market for over a long time, but taking the treatment regularly still has potential side effects. In the research, a small number participants experienced “significant side effects” potentially related to the treatment, such as allergic reaction, digestive hemorrhage and bleeding on the brain. A few participants succumbed across the two arms of the trial, with one fatality potentially linked by the treatment.
