Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
